What
is a helper spring?
A helper spring is a spring that works with
an existing spring to give it more support. The amount
of extra support depends upon the length, width, thickness,
arch, and number of leafs in the unit. Typically the
helper spring attaches to the existing spring pack by
means of a u-bolt and crossbar, and tension is adjusted
by how closely the end of the helper spring is drawn
to the spring pack.
Why
would I want a helper spring on my vehicle?
When a vehicle has a load, whether due to
hauling or towing, the back end tends to set down, which
in turn brings the front end up. This can cause a number
of problems. When the nose of the vehicle is drawn up
the alignment usually changes, causing unusual tire
wear. Often there is less tire surface on the road,
meaning reduced traction, poorer braking, and diminished
steering control. Headlights are no longer aimed at
the road, but more likely into the rear view mirror
of the car in front of you. Helper springs help correct
this condition by leveling out the vehicle. This gives
you the benefit of hauling your load, but still retaining
control of your vehicle. (It is important to note, however,
that while a helper spring will assist you in hauling
your load level, it does not increase the gross vehicle
weight rating (G.V.W.R.). HELLWIG recommends that you
never carry more weight than your vehicle manufacturer
recommends.)
Why
should I choose a HELLWIG helper spring?
HELLWIG is the most recognized name in the
industry for helper springs. All of the most popular
helper spring designs today were originated at our facility.
HELLWIG uses only the finest grade spring steel to insure
uniformity of performance, and durability. For this
reason HELLWIG is proud to offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY
on all helper spring products that we manufacture. There
is no finer quality helper spring on the market.
Which
HELLWIG helper springs is right for me?
HELLWIG offers a variety of helper spring options, which
can be broken down into two product lines; the EZ Level
spring and the Load Pro or LP line. The EZ Level springs
are single leaf products designed for light to medium
duty load leveling. They are simple to install and adjust
with basic hand tools. The EZ-550 kit consists of two
short leafs that mount on the leaf pack behind the axle,
one to a side. They are for light loads, or to reinforce
leaf springs that are starting to sag on light trucks
or passenger cars. The EZ-1000 kits are similar to the
EZ 550 kits but they also include leafs to mount in
front of the axle. They are an excellent application
for medium loads. The EZ-1000 is a fairly universal
kit with only two part numbers needed to cover a majority
of the trucks, mini-vans, and sport utility vehicles
on the road. The Load Pro or LP kits are multi-leaf
kits designed for medium to heavy duty load leveling.
They are available in both constant and progressive
rate applications, depending upon intended use.
The LP-15
kits are designed for compact and import
trucks. They come with 4 spring units to go on each
side of the axle. This kit will level up to the maximum
gross vehicle weight of your truck.

The LP-25
kits are designed for full sized pick up
trucks, vans, RV's, and sport utility vehicles. The
kit contains 2 heavy duty leaf assemblies that run over
both sides of the axle. A separate mounting hardware
kit must be purchased with these heavy duty helper springs.

The LP-35
or "POWER LEVEL" kits are a heavier
duty version of the LP-25 . Recommended for 3/4 and
1 ton applications only, they use the same mounting
hardware kits as the LP-25. For those of you who use
their trucks to its fullest potential, this may be the
helper spring for you.
